Some background is necessary here.
The previous year, a bunch of us Dumbrellots spent a highly entertaining night in the park next to the convention center, the one with all those miniature grassy hills that we christened "Boob Park" for the hills' suggestive shape. We sat on one of the grassboobs and ate ice cream and drank liquor with ourselves and the Dumbrella cartoonist-types -- Rich, Jon and Phillip, John A, Jeffrey R, and Andrew B. It was a pretty goddamned awesome time. This year, we had resolved to have this Boob Park party again, except with the added elements of thrift-store finery and appropriate boombox music. In other words: Prom. But why have Prom at the Boob Park when you've got the Governor's Suite at the Westgate? |

What we have here is what I refer to as Jake's "author photo." If he ever finds himself writing a book or something, this will have to be the jacket picture, no question. |

One of my favorite pictures for some reason; this is the international sign for
"Cheers!"
This is kind of what I mean by me and the Dumbrella peeps -- we make our own fun no matter where we are. |

Finally, it was time. We broke out the beer and the liquor and the champagne that Alex, being her generous self, bought. Oh, the champagne! We got out the jambox and cranked out the music, this time pumped in from an iPod via our trusty cassette tape adapter. |

I won't bore you with all the "Prom" pictures we took, but I would like to acknowledge the fact that some of us are, in fact, goddamned cute-lookin' ladies. |

This is the best men's group photo I could find; curiously, it reveals that we're all part lemur. The key is the eyes. Look at the eyes! |

I'm not going to lie to you: Half the reason we took this picture was because our outfits all matched. |

I only knew about 2/3 of the people in this photo! I think that means it was a good party.

What we have here is an extremely inexpert photo-collage featuring the creators of some of the best-known and best-loved webcomics out there. And me! How about that! |

And that is enough photobragging for one day. SUNDAY The party ended a little before 2 AM, right when it was supposed to (during the height of festivities, we got a visit from hotel management, the end result being that we were told to get it under control by 2:00 or face nebulous consequences). Guests -- both regular partygoers and somewhat sleepy comics creators alike -- departed amicably. It was at this point that wayward Dumbrellist Kellen showed up, and we hung out for a while before crashing in various locations throughout the suite. |

We woke up later that morning to find that Kellen and Jose had spent a considerable amount of time
drawing on the paper plates we had purchased but failed to use. It was like having surprise art
for us right there on the floor, which may have been the intention? It was pretty damn outstanding
either way.
We managed to get showered and clean the place up in time for our noon checkout. I think we left behind just enough of a mess to let the housekeeping staff know we'd had a good time, but we didn't trash the place beyond all reason, either. I would like to think the Westgate would have us back, though my chances of getting the Governor's Suite again are probably not very high. photo credit: seung |

Bye everybody!
Dev, Seung and I took our leave of the Dumbcrowd shortly after checkout, embarking on what would be an eight-hour drive back to the Bay Area. We were about 45 minutes behind Alex and Jake, who had departed from the Evan-mansion slightly earlier. All five of us managed to rendezvous at a great Indian restaurant near Dev's house in Santa Clara, where I had the best masala dosa ever. photo credit: seung |

Following
Indian food, Alex, Jake, Seung and I piled into Alex's car and completed the circle of life. I mean
journey. We finished the trip, coming back to where we were when we started. I was tired as
hell -- I can't believe Jake drove back to Sacramento that night! But that's what he did.
Clearly we are hardcore.
That completes my personal account of San Diego Comic Con 2004 and all that surrounded it. If you actually read this far, congratulations. I hope it was worth it! Now I guess you know what it's like when I go to meet up with people "from the internet." GO BACK TO THE FIRST PAGE HERE
