The Decemberists vs. Fans
The Least Probable, Most Awesome Kickball Game Ever

An Extremely Brief Report

I'm not going to bore you with the story.

The internet helped.

Here are some pictures!

We'd been gathered for only a few minutes when off in the distance, we saw them approach.

Then it was game time.

Chris Funk engaging in the practice of pitching, as opposed to belly-itching.

It should be noted that Count Funkula's bowling background prepared him pretty damn well for this position.

This was from the first inning; Shawn facing off against Team 1138* for the first time.

* I forgot to ask what the other team named themselves; I am a dismal failure. Although in practice, we soon forgot our team name in the heat of blistering athletic competition.

(we lost)

(ANYWAY)

Shawn, in the next inning, at the moment of impact. These pictures were really hard to get and I haven't included a lot of the failures here because I think they make their subjects look sort of foolish, and nobody wants that.

See what I mean. No more of that.

This was King either right before or just after kicking, but I like the amount of hustle represented here.

I somehow managed to snap a picture of this dude James midair, post-impact, right at the height of that brief interval that follows the TOINK sound. Check it out!

That was a perfectly good pitch, Felicia.

I think this or the one following are the best kickball action shots I took. Observe: Jenny Conlee showing the ball who the boss is!

The boss is Jenny!

This is Colin Meloy during one of the later innings, reminding the ball that Colin shares managerial duties with Jenny w/r/t the ball and its position in the global hierarchy.

I need to report that on his first at-bat(?), Colin basically booted the ball way, way out into center field where we had no coverage at all. My memory's spotty, but I think this may have been a pivotal moment for us, morale-wise, and maybe that's why we lost (albeit by a very slim margin). I'm just speculating here.

Behold the crudest Photoshop job ever performed on a sign. I can't begin to tell you who these people are, but I can tell you this: Only about half of them are winners.

But in a sense,

(cue music)

I feel like we all won. I mean seriously. We had a lot of fun, and I think we failed to make total asses of ourselves. This was especially sweet coming after what was, in my opinion, one of the best concerts I've ever seen. (It was the Decemberists show the night before) I hope the band members had a good time, and as far as I'm concerned I've fulfilled a life goal I didn't even know I had; anything that happens after this is pure gravy.
